10 Things you probably didn’t know about St. Barts but should

Planning a trip to St. Barts? Perhaps you should read through the following list to ensure you have a good grip of what to expect on the Island;

  1. St. Barts, also Saint Barthélemy, is part of the overseas of France
  2. Englishmen call it St. Barts or St. Barths but the locals called it Ouanalao.
  3. Until 2003, St. Barts was part of Guadeloupe. It voted to secede and become one of the 4 Leeward Islands in northeastern Caribbean along with French West Indies, Saint Martins, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
  4. The country has a population of 9035, its capital is Gustavia, and measures 25 square kilometers.
  5. Previously, it was the only Swedish colony worth noting in the Caribbean.
  6. The official language is French but Antillean Creole is also spoken. The population of the island includes White, Creole, Black and Mestizo.
  7. The average temperature on the island is 25 degrees centigrade, but this can rise up to 32 degrees. Night temperatures can fall as low as 13 degrees.
  8. Being a French Commune, the island is also part of the European Union. It is a presidential democracy.
  9. The economic mainstay of the island is tourism and trade. Come prepared to shop and enjoy your vacation.
  10. There are approximately 25 hotels in St. Barts. Most of these have 15 or fewer rooms. You are well advised to make your booking well in advance. You do not want to get locked out of these accommodations unless you are travelling with your yacht.
