Italy is by all accounts a beautiful country with a rich history and very eclectic culture. The city of Naples in the country's southern region has long been one of the world's more popular travel destinations but for those who travel on a budget, it get a bit expensive. The good news is that it doesn't have to be.

Any European vacation requires a respectable amount of money in order to be enjoyed to the fullest. St. Elmo's Castle is one of the city's most historic and beloved landmarks. It features a small but fascinating art museum and if you head to the rooftop you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples and much of the rest of the city. The Castle normally charges admission but if you stop in about an hour before they close up on any night of the week, the staff will almost always let you in for free.

Via San Gregorio Armeno is a prominent and very old Italian street that is lined with a number of workshops, most of which are small family-owned companies that make hand-crafted Christmas decor. Dubbed "Christmas Alley", the shops on this street typically keep their doors open during work hours for people to stroll through and watch them as they create various nativity pieces.

For the art lovers who are visiting Napels, the MADRE Museum of Contemporary Art is one of Italy's premier art museums. The collection of modern artworks is extensive to say the least and every Monday visitors can see everything that museum has to offer at no charge.

Naples has something of a reputation for being among the more expensive travel destinations in Europe but if you know where to go and what to look for, it certainly doesn't have to be.
