Mauritius is a small volcanic island surrounded by beautiful coral reefs in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa. In fact, this is the world’s third largest coral reef.
The people and the culture come from a blend of diverse populations and both French and English are widely spoken. The people, above all, are very warm and welcoming.
Port Louis, with its mountain backdrop, is the capital and offers the visitor other distractions such markets, a Chinatown, a collection of well preserved colonial buildings and a number of good museums. One museum is the Domaine Les Pailles Cultural and Heritage Centre with its horse drawn carriages, miniature railway, spice garden and a selection of restaurants.
Beaches are not the only attraction although they are exceptional. Mauritius, being a mountainous island allows you to enjoy numerous natural settings. The Black River Gorges National Park is one example. It is a large expanse of thick lush tropical forest with over 300 species of flowering plants. There are amazing views here and a number of trails for exploring the park.
